CAMSA supports AMTA in opposing AB1822
Since AMTA's last update, there have been amendments to AB 1822 that are meant to make it easier for legislators to support it. Two key amendments are these:
  • the bill's author has removed the provision that would have guaranteed a return to local massage permitting when SB 731 sunsets in 2016. Massage therapists will still have to make sure SB 731 is renewed in 2016, but this was always the case under current law.
  • Another amendment allows cities to "opt in" to local investigations for CAMTC certification. That is, cities could either let the CAMTC do their own investigation of certification applicants, or they could choose to do it themselves. But...
AB 1822 would still undercut the authority and efficacy of the CAMTC and lead to the collapse of statewide certification.
Please write to the members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee before the bill's next hearing, on May 19, 2010, and tell them how much statewide certification means to you.

Use your letters to remind legislators...
  • ...that the CAMTC is already managing to weed out thousands of unqualified applicants who had slipped by city officials.
  • ...that statewide certification is the best way to differentiate between massage therapists and criminals.
  • ...that local, non-portable credentials keep your business from thriving.
  • ...that you are a healthcare practitioner and deserve to be regulated like one.

Be calm, be courteous, and be concise!

Address your letter to the Chair of the Committee,
Assemblymember Felipe Fuentes.

Send your letter via email attachment or snail mail before May 19 to all the members of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Send copies of your email or letter ("cc") to Assemblymember Sandré Swanson and the AMTA-CA's lobbying team (see email addresses below).

Pass this information along via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or anything else to all the other massage therapists you know!
